Description

Sexual harassment and misogyny in fandom culture is a major theme of the book. Towards the beginning of the book female romantic lead is harassed by a boy she thought was a friend when she turns him down when he asks her out. He says she is stuck up and should date him for being a nice guy to her. Her best friend misunderstands the situation and says the protagonist should give him a chance, leading to a falling out that lasts most of the book. This friend later dates the boy who harasses the protagonist. Towards the end of the book, this friend confides in the protagonist that the boy was trying to pressure her into sex, and she apologizes for not taking the protagonist’s side in the first place. Another character recalls how this boy forced a kiss on a girl at some point before the events of the book.
