Description

The story takes place in a world that has completely outlawed abortion. As such, unwanted pregnancies and teenage pregnancies are mentioned many times throughout the novel. 1 Connor: The male protagonist is caught red-handed while trespassing. He is worried that the man who caught him is going to exploit him in exchange for not turning him in. As it turns out, the man had no such intentions however. 7 Connor: One of the male protagonists touches the female lead's hair, who becomes very uncomfortable at this, and subdues him. Her experience in the foster system, as well as having learned how to defend herself from "Creeps" is mentioned continually throughout the story. 12 Risa: A 16-17 year old girl calls one of the protagonists, a 13-year-old, cute in a flirtatious way without being aware of his age. She is told off for this by the female lead. 20 Risa: The human trafficking of babies in Europe is mentioned briefly. 24 Risa: The female lead is cornered in a bathroom by a male antagonist, who harasses her, then grabs her face and implies he will impregnate her. They are interrupted by the male lead, who acts dismissive of the issue and even tells the antagonist to proceed. It is revealed later that both the antagonist's attempted assault, and the male lead's nonchalance were part of a powerplay, and neither of them intended to go through with what they said they'd do. The incident is brought up several times going forward. 67 Risa: The female lead's boyfriend has the arm of the above mentioned man grafted onto him. She is outwardly very uncomfortable at the idea of having to look or interact with the arm of the man who attempted to assault her, and there is a semi-graphic recap of the aforementioned events. 68 Lev: It is mentioned that the "age of adulthood" might be lowered to 17. Worthy of note: Towards the end of the book, the male lead acquires a false identity, which is 19 years old. This means that he is legally a 19-year-old, dating his girlfriend, who is 16 (despite them actually being the same age.)
