The 17-yo female lead is raised on a misogynistic militarized space outpost where many women are forced into a cycle of frequent pregnancy and child-rearing starting in their 18th year. She is forced to confront this exploitation in numerous ways as it affects, or threatens to affect, her and her loved ones. A secondary female character was sequestered, raped, and impregnated by a male antagonist when she was a teen. She escaped with the child, who she chose to raise. The 17-yo female lead is kissed against her will twice by a once-beloved older “uncle” (no biological relation). The narrative realistically portrays her struggling through self-doubt and trauma.
