The protagonist is a 15-year-old girl in a relationship with an 18-year-old boy. They hide their relationship and, later, her pregnancy to avoid getting him in trouble. The protagonist was incarcerated before the events of the book, from ages 9-15, and sexual harassment from correctional officers was a frequent occurrence. One officer regularly came into her cell to masturbate near her. The protagonist's stepfather would often try to assault her in her bed at night when she was a child. At one point, an adult gives the protagonist the book Push by Sapphire, which is about a teenage girl who becomes pregnant from her father's sexual abuse.
