From the author’s note: “In addition to graphic focus on pregnancy, miscarriage, abortion, and childbirth, You Weren’t Meant to Be Human contains explicit depictions of extreme violence and gore, suicidal ideation, intrusive thoughts, self-harm, sexual assault, and abuse, sometimes alone, sometimes combined, sometimes indistinguishable one from another.” Aside from the frequent sexual violence in the protagonist’s relationship, there is a teenage character who is helped to expel a stillbirth. The protagonist’s internal monologue considers that she may have been impregnated through rape by an older man.
