Description

S1E2: acouple have sex but it is clear that the woman's voice is not worth as much as her husband's, and because of this may not actually have the ability to consent (16:00). S1E2: a woman is groped by a powerful character, her husband sees, and does not intervene. She gets out of the situation (26:50). S1E3: a woman is distressed after meeting along with a powerful man, his wife rebukes him and he attacks her (11:30). It is made clear that the wife knows that her husband is doing bad things to women in the community including herself. A female character is raped by her husband on camera (19:30-22:30). It is brief but disturbing and mirrors the earlier sex scene in a few ways. The victim confides in clear language what happened to her to a woman who she trusts and who meets her with empathy at first, but then defends the abuser (23:00). She continues to deal with the emotional consequences of this event for the rest of the episode, and it is a key moment in her character arc. S1E5: a character has been involved in intimate partner violence against a former romantic partner resulting in her death. Worthy of note: The series deals with the controlling nature of relationships between men and women in the cult. A character is kept a prisoner in her own home for a while by her husband at the behest of the community leaders. There are also multiple instances that show how little power the women have in the community. However, the show centers a story about a woman who is rebelling against that community.
