Description

A college student has sex with a classmate, and later claims he assaulted her. The narrator accuses her of lying, since she was in the room at the time and did not ever hear her say "no"; however, it's presented ambiguously, and the narrator is shown to be unreliable. The narrator is raped repeatedly by her husband, but does not believe rape can exist within a marriage. She explicitly does not want it the first time he forces himself on her, but later encounters are described in less detail. She orgasms during the assaults, and it's implied this is further "proof" it is not rape. She's later revealed to be undergoing a psychotic break with periodic delusional episodes and sometimes being drugged, further proving she couldn't properly consent. In a moment of rage, the narrator strangles another woman in a way that many interpret as sexual, although she denies this was her motivation. The other woman declines to speculate on the narrator's sexuality, simply saying it felt "violating." The victim was in the process of getting dressed when the assault occurred; the narrator says her pants came down in the scuffle, leading to her being in her underwear, while others believe she's the one who undressed her. The narrator is also described as having gotten "on top of" the victim during the assault, the victim sitting on her bed. The narrator briefly thinks her father-in-law is sexually extorting her, and admits to being aroused at the idea. However, he never actually comes onto her. A teenage girl develops a crush on a man in his early twenties, but due to the time period, this age gap is considered normal. However, the ending reveals he's actually her older brother, which was unknown to her.
