Gabrielle (an adult woman) has an on/off affair with her teenage gardener throughout series 1. He is 17 and it is disclosed that the affair started when he was 16. The affair is implied to be sexual, although sex is not explicitly shown onscreen. It is named as statutory rape once (in S1E13). S1 Pilot: Gabrielle does not want to attend a party because of a guest who grabs her ass; her husband says she should "let him" for financial reasons. S1E08: at the end of the episode, from about 39 minutes onwards, an extended violent strangling scene is overlaid with a consensual sex scene, with the camera regularly flipping from one to the other. S1E09: at the opening of the episode, the voiceover says that Gabrielle's "first great idea was when she was 15, after her stepfather paid her a late-night visit. She left home the next day." A video is shown of an adult man in a child's bedroom drinking beer. This somewhat implies child sexual abuse, although it is not shown onscreen or stated more explicitly. S1E10: one of the women in the street is in the sex trade. S1E11: a woman babysitting is seen in the nude by her employer, by accident. S1E12: a man sabotages his wife's contraceptive pills. At the end of the episode, they are shown kissing in bed. This is part of an ongoing plot until the end of the series - she gets pregnant, and ultimately finds out that he did this to her, although not until episode 22. S1E15: a teenage girl tells her mother she is planning to have sex because she has been dumped for 'not putting out,' and that all the boys at her school are 'like that.' A friend of the boy Gabrielle is having an affair with, an older teenage boy, sexually harasses Gabrielle and manages to manipulate her husband into giving him a job as their gardener. At 15:58, he walks into her bedroom while she is alone, and tries to force her to kiss him. When she slaps him, he blackmails her about the affair, saying she “has to be nice to (him), at least once” before leaving the room. The plot is later resolved without her sleeping with him.
